7 Fine Motor Skill Activities For Preschoolers

by Betty White

When children are growing up, there are so many things that can help them become better and more active. Usually, kids develop these skills at a different rate. Therefore, you must ensure that you know what you kid loves doing so that you can help him/her in developing themselves. Some kids can have trouble with tasks like grasping pencils, utensils, moving objects, scissors and so on using their fingers. Some even have a problem with tying their shoes. Therefore, make sure you help your kids in such cases. Some of the fine motor skill activities for preschoolers include the following.

If you have been looking for activities for your child, you can introduce the play-dough and putty. This is a game in which the kids will play with putty and mold it into different shapes. They will thus learn to squeeze and have a better grip. Also, stretching and rolling the putty will not be a problem for them.

You can as well introduce painting to the toddlers. Let them become messy as they paint with their fingers. This will help them become good in coordinating their eyes and fingers. Most kids enjoy painting with their fingers. For those who prefer brushes, this is a perfect opportunity to help them know how to grasp the devices well. Hence, painting is also a very nice task.

The children can also play with sponges. This is also another excellent way of improving their fine motor skills. Using a clean sponge with water and bowls will help these children think and become creative. If you fill one bowl with water and leave the other one empty, the kid can soak the sponge and squeeze the water into the empty sponge.

Rice game is another good game that you can introduce to the kid. Look for tweezers, an empty bowl, and a bowl with a handful of rice. Set the jars apart and grad some tweezers as well. Start competing with your child in filling the empty jars with rice. You will use the tweezers to grab the uncooked rice. In case the rice is too small, other cereals could do.

Another water game that involved filling empty cups using syringes and droppers is also recommended. Half-fill one cup and get droppers and syringes. Then, pick an empty cup and place it at a distance from the one with water. Time the kid using a timer and let him use the dropper to fill the empty cup.

If you want your kid to learn about gardening and planting, you can also introduce these tasks to them. Although digging and gardening may seem like gross skills, you can select the parts that do not require much muscle control. For instance, you can let the kids transfer seedling to the garden.

So many other tasks are available that you can let the kids enjoy. This will help them to learn things that they would never have learned until old age. Additionally, some of these tasks can actually shape the career of the kid. For instance, your kid can become an outstanding artist with the right training.
