Selecting The Right Roll On Trailer Jack

by Michelle Thompson

Small boats and yachts can be trailed down the road and parked at home garages. Families will pull that out when summer and fishing seasons come. This tells us that recreational vehicles are not the only ones that need trailer jacks. Boats need roll on trailer jack as well for easy driving.

Its main and sub function are simple. You have wheels to allow pivoting. Handles are useful in raising it up and lowering it down. Also, the hitch can be connected and disconnected by this. It allows leveling up and stabilizations during times of movements and rests.

Picking the best trailer jacks needs you to consider and study the environment of the water it will be exposed to. It should handle the possible corrosion at less frequency through power coatings in fresh waters. Meanwhile, it needs zinc coatings or aluminum components in order to survive salt water. Lubricating it will ensure its life expectancy to be longer than what is expected.

Though, you should factor in the possibility of the coats being removed or corroded over time. For instance, trailer jacks that are in salt water for a hundred hours will affect its zinc coating. It will completely clear it off from the device which renders it useless the next time you use it. Thus, there is importance in buying ones that are resistant to UV and corrosions.

The second thing to consider is the height of your trailer boat. The measurement lets you know how high it will be off ground for leveling later. You will base the length of the trailer jacks on that. Also, make sure that the ball mounts are able to rise and fall to the height you need.

Another measurement you need to do is the distance of your travel. This is because you need the correct size of extension as you cover that distance. For closer or smaller distance, you may use smaller jacks. For long distance travels, you might need the heavy duty ones in order to handle the distance.

The third thing to consider is that the jack fits the tongue of the boat. Moreover, it is of utmost importance that you weigh that tongue. To do this, household scale may be used and placed under it. Do note that the tongue needs to weigh less than three hundred pounds. When it exceeds that weight, add a brick and place it on its opposite side at least three feet from the scale. Measuring this prevents any imbalance that can occur.

Another is to choose if you want single wheel or double wheels. The former is ideal if the road is made of gravel, concrete, and asphalt covered pavements. Meanwhile, the latter are more on hard surfaces. Though this makes it hard to maneuver, it does make more contact with the ground.

At times, you might get confused as to what type of trailer jacks is best for the boat. When you do, do not hesitate to ask for help from friends and professionals for they know how this things work. They will recommend things so you can form the best decision. In effect, towing the trailer will be smooth in the future.
